
Rhode Island priest to join staff of apostolic nunciature

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (CNS) -- Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of Providence has announced that Msgr. Robert C. Evans, a priest of his diocese, will join the staff of Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, apostolic nuncio to the United States, at the nunciature in Washington, effective Aug. 1. Msgr. Evans is currently director of the Institute for Continuing Theological Education at North American College in Rome, a post he has held since July 1, 2001. In making the announcement, Bishop Tobin said Msgr. Evans' "considerable gifts and talents, along with his personal and loyal love for the church, will be a true blessing to the work of the apostolic nuncio." Born in Moultrie, Ga., the priest attended high school and college in Rhode Island at Our Lady of Providence Seminary in Warwick, where he earned a bachelor's degree. He studied for the priesthood at North American College, earning a licentiate in canon law there. He was ordained to the priesthood at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome on July 2, 1973.
