
Retired editor of Richmond diocesan newspaper dies at age 72

RICHMOND, Va. (CNS) -- Charles E. Mahon, who retired in 2003 after 38 years as editor of The Catholic Virginian, newspaper of the Richmond Diocese, died July 14 at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond. He was 72 and had complications from double pneumonia. A funeral Mass was celebrated July 18 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond, followed by burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mahon became editor of The Catholic Virginian March 17, 1965. During that time the newspaper was weekly and the Diocese of Richmond encompassed all of Virginia. The Diocese of Arlington, which covers northern Virginia, was established in 1974. The Catholic Virginian temporarily served as the new diocese's official publication for about a year until the Arlington Catholic Herald was established. Mahon retired June 30, 2003.
