Pax Christi asks Catholics to urge U.S. to end involvement in Iraq

Published: 2005-07-08

ERIE, Pa. (CNS) -- Pax Christi USA is distributing an open letter to U.S. Catholics urging them to appeal to the U.S. government to end its involvement in the war in Iraq. The letter is posted on the group's Web site, www.paxchristiusa.org, where supporters are urged to add their name. The organization is also hoping to place the letter in Catholic publications as an advertisement. A Pax Christi spokesman told Catholic News Service July 6 that the group plans to have the letter published in the September issue of U.S. Catholic magazine, and also noted that many local Pax Christi groups are trying to get the ad placed in their own diocesan newspapers. At the top of the letter is a quote from Pope John Paul II's statement for the 2005 World Day of Peace: "How can we not think with profound regret of the drama unfolding in Iraq, which has given rise to tragic situations of uncertainty and insecurity for all?"
