Participants at Catholic institute learn to build teams, set goals

COLCHESTER, Vt. (CNS) -- Twenty-three Catholic press members gathered in June in Vermont to learn how to be better leaders, promote better teamwork among their staff members and do more with limited resources. Their aim was to better tell the story of the church and serve their readers but also help staff members feel they have more of a stake in what their publications do. Participants in the 2005 Catholic Press Leadership Institute June 22-26 at St. Michael's College in Colchester also heard speakers talk about setting goals, creating a strategic plan and managing change. Other sessions covered brainstorming on story ideas and how to get readers' input; using the Internet more effectively; and taking advantage of digital photography advances for print and the Web. Traci Griffith, assistant professor in St. Michael's College journalism department, led a discussion on newsroom ethics.
