Delaware legislators delay decision on embryonic stem-cell research
Published: 2005-07-01
DOVER, Del. (CNS) -- In what officials of the Diocese of Wilmington and other pro-life advocates viewed as a major victory, the Delaware House of Representatives delayed action June 28 on a bill that would allow embryonic stem-cell research in Delaware. The Delaware Regenerative Medicine Act, known as S.B. 80, was tabled until the General Assembly reconvenes in January. The Senate passed the bill by a 14-7 vote June 14. The House action pleased Wilmington Bishop Michael A. Saltarelli, who made an unprecedented trip to Dover June 22 to lead a prayer service outside Legislative Hall to oppose the bill. "I want to thank all those legislators and people of good will who fought against S.B. 80's support of immoral embryonic stem-cell research," the bishop said in a statement. "We continue to support the very promising adult stem-cell research being conducted today."
