
New nuncio for New Zealand, Pacific islands ordained an archbishop

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Msgr. Charles D. Balvo, newly appointed papal nuncio to New Zealand and nine other Pacific island nations, was ordained an archbishop at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York June 29, his 54th birthday. Cardinal Edward M. Egan of New York was principal ordaining bishop and was the homilist and principal celebrant for the Mass. Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, nuncio to the United States, who read the apostolic letter appointing the new archbishop, and Archbishop Celestino Migliore, nuncio to the United Nations, were co-ordaining bishops. Sixteen other bishops also joined in the consecration. A native of Brooklyn, Archbishop Balvo was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of New York in 1976, and served parish assignments in the archdiocese before entering the Vatican diplomatic service in 1987.
