At U.S.-Mexico conference, cardinal calls for new hope for migrants

EL PASO, Texas (CNS) -- Washington Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick urged bishops from the United States and Mexico to help make "the New World a place of new hope" for migrants throughout the Western Hemisphere. Addressing the binational conference on migration in El Paso June 23, Cardinal McCarrick said, "Let our solidarity with them (migrants) and our love be obvious in what we do, even if it means that in this one America we must share our God-given resources in a more equitable way and share our wealth more equitably as well." Jointly sponsored by the bishops' conferences of Mexico and the United States, the June 23-26 meeting was to consider how to implement the ideals of "Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope," a joint pastoral letter issued by the two bishops' conferences in 2003. Fifteen bishops from the two countries attended, as well as church workers in various aspects of ministry to immigrants.
