Year of the Eucharist event at Indianapolis church draws 1,000 people

INDIANAPOLIS (CNS) -- A downpour forced an outdoor Year of the Eucharist celebration in Indianapolis to be moved indoors, but the devotion to the Blessed Sacrament shown by the approximately 1,000 Catholics who packed St. John Evangelist Church scattered any dark clouds of disappointment about the change of venue. It began with a combination of Scripture readings, sung responses, choral meditations and prayers of intercessions. Indianapolis Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein delivered the sermon and said a prayer of commissioning for those who have been involved in the Indianapolis Archdiocese's Disciples in Mission evangelization effort over the past five years. Standing in the church of the oldest parish in Indianapolis -- it dates back to 1837 -- Archbishop Buechlein reflected on the roots of the Catholic faith in central and southern Indiana. He gave special attention to the first bishop of Vincennes -- Bishop Simon Brute -- and to Blessed Mother Theodore Guerin, the founder of the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods. The archdiocese was established as the Diocese of Vincennes in 1834; it became an archdiocese in 1944.
