Canadian Basilians sell island used by Pope John Paul in 2002
Published: 2005-06-16
TORONTO (CNS) -- The home Pope John Paul II used during his visit to Toronto for World Youth Day in 2002 has been sold. Strawberry Island, owned by the Basilian Fathers for more than 80 years, was sold to private owners June 14. The decision to sell the island in Ontario's Lake Simcoe came after lengthy consideration and debate within the Congregation of St. Basil. "In the last few years, the island hasn't been well used by the Basilians," said Father Ken Decker, superior general. The island gained access to running water and electricity in the 1970s, and the main lodge was renovated to accommodate Pope John Paul for his 2002 visit.
