On third Sunday of elections, Lebanese turn out enthusiastically
Published: 2005-06-13
BIKFAYA, Lebanon (CNS) -- As voters made their way to the Bikfaya polling station next to Our Lady of Deliverance Maronite Catholic Church, they were met by an army of campaign volunteers handing out fliers for candidates. Police and army officers guarded the polling site as voters approached a public school gate and presented their voter registration cards. Unlike the previous two Sundays in other sections of Lebanon, on June 12 voters turned out in large numbers in the third and most contested round of the country's parliamentary elections. The elections, spread out among four consecutive Sundays for different voting districts, began May 29 and are the first to be free from Syrian interference. The June 12 elections were for the Mount Lebanon and Bekaa districts.
