What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Two auxiliary bishops ordained for Seattle Archdiocese

Published: 2005-06-09

SEATTLE (CNS) -- Archbishop Alex J. Brunett ordained two auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Seattle June 6, saying their ability with languages will help them share a message of hope and joy with people of many cultures and backgrounds. Bishop Eusebio L. Elizondo and Bishop Joseph J. Tyson, who both have served as pastors in the Archdiocese of Seattle, were ordained at St. James Cathedral. Delivering his homily in Spanish and English before a capacity crowd that represented the cultural diversity of the archdiocese, Archbishop Brunett reminded his new auxiliaries that they were assuming roles of authority in the apostolic tradition of the church that required compassion and humility. The bishop's role of "teaching and proclaiming the word of God is tied up with the authority given to the apostles to preach in the name of Christ," Archbishop Brunett said. "But this mandate by Christ to teach with authority in his name has to be lived out in a life that is humble and compassionate. There is no room for arrogance."
