Thousands of Hong Kong residents commemorate Tiananmen Square
Published: 2005-06-07
HONG KONG (CNS) -- Despite the passing of 16 years since the Tiananmen Square incident, organizers of commemorations in Hong Kong said that the democratic desires of residents there remain high. Bishop Joseph Zen Ze-kiun of Hong Kong spoke at a prayer meeting on the anniversary of the 1989 incident in which security forces killed protesting students and residents in Beijing's Tiananmen Square area. The prayer meeting preceded an annual vigil, reported UCA News, an Asian church news agency based in Thailand. About 300 Christians gathered at Victoria Park to pray June 4 for those who died in the pro-democracy movement and to express hope for democratic progress in China. Annual events recalling the 1989 crackdown kicked off with a parade May 29 in which about 1,000 people marched. "The feeling of people may have changed, but their will has not," Bishop Zen said.
