Pittsburgh project to visit parish catechetical programs wraps up
Published: 2005-06-07
PITTSBURGH (CNS) -- There are some 6,000 catechists in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, and all of them can say they were part of a historic event. When the diocese completed visits to every parish religious education program during the past 15 years, it became the first in the country to undertake and complete such a project. Begun in 1989, the diocese undertook the project to gauge the status of religious education programs in parishes, recognize the strengths of each parish program and offer needed recommendations for improvement. A team of diocesan officials visited one parish in each of the 16 deaneries each year. About 2,000 of the diocese's 6,000 catechists celebrated the completion of the project at a diocesan convocation and dinner May 26 at the Pittsburgh convention center.
