Farmworker story not just about covering protests, reporters told

ORLANDO, Fla. (CNS) -- Two farmworker advocates challenged Catholic journalists not just to write about farmworker issues, but to get to the heart of workers' concerns in their coverage. "Don't just cover a protest, cover the substance, get to the heart of the issue. Help readers feel solidarity, not just sympathy," said Sister Ann Kendrick, a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur. She spoke during the Catholic Media Convocation, a joint meeting of the Catholic Press Association and the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals in Orlando. Sister Kendrick, who has worked with and lived among farmworkers in central Florida for 31 years, presented a May 25 workshop with Nancy Powers, director of the Farmworker Solidarity project of the Florida Catholic Conference, which represents the state's Catholic bishops on policy matters.
