Bishop Boland wins CPA's 2005 Bishop John England Award

Published: 2005-06-06

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (CNS) -- Recently retired Bishop Raymond J. Boland of Kansas City-St. Joseph has received the Catholic Press Association's Bishop John England Award, an honor reserved for the publishers of diocesan newspapers. It was presented to Bishop Boland during a June 3 reception at the diocesan chancery. The award was announced May 25 in Orlando, Fla., during the 2005 Catholic Media Convocation, a joint meeting of the CPA and the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals. In comments in Orlando and during the chancery reception, Albert de Zutter, editor of the diocesan newspaper, The Catholic Key, said that the "greatest gift a bishop-publisher -- or any publisher -- can give an editor and staff is the opportunity to do their job with integrity and professionalism. For 12 years Bishop Boland has afforded us that precious gift." The annual award recognizes publishers in the Catholic press for the defense of First Amendment rights.
