
Winners of 2005 Archbishop O'Meara awards announced

ORLANDO, Fla. (CNS) -- Articles in diocesan newspapers in Oregon, Texas, New Jersey and Pennsylvania took top honors in the 2005 Archbishop Edward T. O'Meara journalism awards competition sponsored by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. The awards, recognizing excellence in reporting on the church's worldwide missionary work in diocesan newspapers and Catholic magazines, were presented May 26 during the Catholic Press Association's convention in Orlando. Reporter Kristen Hannum of the Catholic Sentinel, Portland, Ore., received first-place honors in the category "visits to the missions" for her article, "The Philippines: Paradise Lost, Searching for a Better Future." An article by Jim Jones about lay missionaries in Honduras, published in the North Texas Catholic in Fort Worth, took first prize in the "mission news" category. Maura Rossi, reporter for The Beacon, in Paterson, N.J., won first prize in the category "interviews with missionaries," which described the ordeals of Xaverian Father Victor Bongiovanni. In the category "mission series," Susan Brinkmann of The Catholic Standard & Times, Philadelphia, won the top prize for documenting the religious persecution of Catholics in North Korea, India, Vietnam, Sudan and Colombia.
