
2005 Eileen Egan Journalism Award winners announced

ORLANDO, Fla. (CNS) -- Journalists who wrote about issues related to the developing world for the National Catholic Reporter newspaper and for the archdiocesan newspapers of Portland, Ore., and Philadelphia took top honors in the 2005 Eileen Egan Journalism Awards sponsored by Catholic Relief Services. The awards, given by the U.S. bishops' overseas relief and development agency, were presented May 26 during the Catholic Press Association convention in Orlando. Barbara Fraser and Paul Jeffrey of the National Catholic Reporter won in the category for publications with national circulation for their 10-part series: "Latin America: Search for a Future." Coverage by Kristen Hannum of the Catholic Sentinel in Portland on poverty, educational and crowding issues in the Philippines won in the category for publications with a circulation under 35,000. An article by Susan Brinkman of The Catholic Standard & Times in Philadelphia documenting religious persecution of Catholics in North Korea, India, Vietnam, Sudan and Colombia won among papers with a circulation of more than 35,000. The four writers will travel overseas next year to witness firsthand the work of CRS.
