Pope names JPII's personal secretary as archbishop of Krakow, Poland
Published: 2005-06-03
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI has named Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, Pope John Paul II's personal secretary for almost 40 years, to be the new archbishop of Krakow, Poland. The 66-year-old Polish archbishop's entire priestly life was tied to Pope John Paul. Archbishop Karol Wojtyla of Krakow -- who later became Pope John Paul -- ordained him to the priesthood in 1963 and asked him to become his private secretary in 1966. Archbishop Dziwisz was at his side for the next 39 years, skiing with him, celebrating Mass with him, moving to the Vatican with him and keeping vigil at his side in his final illness and death. The Vatican's announcement of the appointment of Archbishop Dziwisz and the retirement of Cardinal Franciszek Macharski of Krakow, 78, was made June 3.
