Pope says world must mobilize to assure human right to education
Published: 2005-06-02
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The international community must mobilize to assure respect for the human right to education, Pope Benedict XVI said. In a world increasingly marked by the globalization of the economy and information, "it is important at this moment to mobilize the powers of intelligence to ensure everyone's human right to education and culture is recognized, especially in the poorest countries," he said. Pope Benedict's remarks were made in a letter to Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the Vatican archivist, who was representing the Vatican at a special June 2 seminar at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. A copy of the letter was released at the Vatican. The seminar on "Culture, Reason and Liberty" was organized to mark the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's visit to the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
