
New Mexico bishop renamed to religious freedom commission

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Bishop Ricardo Ramirez of Las Cruces, N.M., has been reappointed to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, along with two other members. Bishop Ramirez was reappointed for a second two-year term on the independent commission established to monitor religious rights around the world. Also reappointed for two-year terms were vice chair Felice D. Gaer, director of the Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights of the American Jewish Committee, and vice chair Nina Shea, director of the Center for Religious Freedom of Freedom House. The commission's nine members are appointed by majority and minority leaders in Congress or by the president. Their terms expire on a staggered calendar.
