Published: 2005-06-01
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The Roman Catholic-Polish National Catholic dialogue group got its first look at a major Polish National Catholic Church document on church unity during its May 10-11 spring session in Buffalo, N.Y. Roman Catholic members of the dialogue "welcomed this paper as a significant step forward" that "helped to clarify the progress made and the issues that remain to be addressed," according to a May 26 news release from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. An initial Roman Catholic response to the paper, titled "The Polish National Catholic Church: Commitment to Work for Church Unity," was expected at the next dialogue session, set for Sept. 19-20 in Buffalo. The May meeting was the first to be co-chaired on the Roman Catholic side by Bishop Edward U. Kmiec of Buffalo. Retired Prime Bishop John F. Swantek of the Polish National Catholic Church is the other co-chairman.
