ORLANDO, Fla. (CNS) -- El Centinela, Spanish-language monthly newspaper of the Archdiocese of Portland, Ore., won six Catholic Press Association first-place awards for Spanish-language publications, with four of the awards going to editor Rocio Rios. The first-place general excellence award went to El Pregonero, weekly of the Washington Archdiocese. It was cited for its reportage of "hard-hitting issues" such as violence against women and for "stories readers can use" such as how to buy a first home. "It has everything that makes an excellent newspaper," said the judges. Second place in the general excellence category went to El Pueblo Catolico, monthly of the Denver Archdiocese, and third place was won by Chicago Catolico, monthly of the Chicago Archdiocese. Honorable mentions went to El Centinela, Portland; La Voz Catolica, Miami; Mision Columbana, St. Columban, Neb.; New Jersey Catolico, Newark, N.J.; and Revista Maryknoll, Maryknoll, N.Y. The CPA awards were announced May 27 at the Catholic Media Convocation in Orlando.
