Catholic grandmother hosts children's summer camp at her home

Published: 2005-05-31

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark. (CNS) -- The grandchildren of Anne and Don Dierks get the opportunity each summer to do something most children don't. They attend Granny Camp. The summer camp was created by Anne Dierks in 1996 as a way to spend more time with her grandchildren who live across the United States and would not otherwise have quality time with their grandparents. Dierks, a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Hot Springs Village, recently retired as director of the Respect Life Office of the Little Rock Diocese. She planned to host Granny Camp this summer for 11 of her 14 grandchildren at her home. Her grandchildren are officially invited to attend once they are out of diapers. Granny Camp is private time the Dierkses can spend with their grandchildren, create memories and spoil them -- all in one or two weeks. And for the grandchildren, it is a time for making crafts, learning table manners, watching movies and searching for rocks and bugs.
