What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Granola maker uses some of her proceeds to support pro-life cause

CLARKSTON, Mich. (CNS) -- Some people join pro-life marches. Others may silently pray. Michaelene Hearn uses granola. Proceeds from Sweetnola for Life, a dessert granola created by Hearn with rolled oats, honey, sunflower seeds and chocolate-covered peanuts, are going to pro-life organizations. With other flavors such as Heavenly Organic Granola and Simply Sunny & Honey, she decided to take a direct approach and target her newest creation for life. "I wanted to do something special," said Hearn, who attends two parishes in the Detroit suburban area of Oakland County. "I wanted a granola for life." The front label of her product, Sweetnola for Life, reads, "We have been created in order to love and to be loved. ... Life is for living. ... Blessed Mother Teresa." On the back is a prayer, which she calls her "bumper sticker for breakfast," by Father Jim Rafferty, associate pastor of St. Anastasia Parish in Troy.
