Priest's chalice used by Cardinal Ratzinger, Pope John Paul II

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (CNS) -- Of the first two priests to use Father Brian Klingele's personal chalice, one was a pope and one would become one. In fact, it was in the space of only two days in June 2002 that the chalice bought for Father Klingele as an ordination gift was used first by the cardinal who would become Pope Benedict XVI, and then used a day later by Pope John Paul II. Father Klingele, associate pastor at St. Peter Cathedral in Kansas City, was a seminarian at the North American College in Rome at the time. His parents, with assistance from Holy Trinity Parish in Lenexa, Kan., where he had worked summers as a seminarian, bought him the chalice. The Gothic-style, gold-colored metal chalice features 12 silver medallions on its base, each depicting one of the Twelve Apostles.
