New York church official says group wrong on college's Catholic label
Published: 2005-05-03
NEW YORK (CNS) -- A report by the Cardinal Newman Society that Cardinal Edward M. Egan of New York has declared Marymount Manhattan College to be no longer Catholic is not correct, according to the cardinal's spokesman. Joseph Zwilling said in a telephone interview May 1 that the cardinal had taken no action regarding the college. Catholic News Service called the Newman organization May 2 for a reaction, but the call was not immediately returned. The Web site of the Cardinal Newman Society, which is based in Manassas, Va., said: "The Archdiocese of New York has formally declared Marymount Manhattan College ... no longer a Catholic institution." The site also said the school "has been under protest" by the society "for inviting pro-abortion Sen. Hillary Clinton to give its commencement address and receive an honorary degree on May 20."
