
U.S. delegates to next bishops' synod named

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- When the world Synod of Bishops meets in Rome this October to discuss the Eucharist , U.S. bishops participating will include the president and past president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The USCCB announced March 30 that Pope John Paul II has confirmed the four U.S. delegates and two alternates who were elected by the bishops during their meeting in Washington last November. The four delegates are: Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia; Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory of Atlanta, immediate past president of the USCCB; Bishop William S. Skylstad of Spokane, Wash., USCCB president; Bishop Donald W. Wuerl of Pittsburgh. Elected as alternates -- to step in if a delegate is unable to attend -- were Bishops Donald W. Trautman of Erie, Pa., and Blase J. Cupich of Rapid City, S.D.
