Published: 2005-03-31
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II has accepted the resignation of Bishop Robert E. Mulvee as bishop of Providence, R.I., and named Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of Youngstown, Ohio, to succeed him. The changes were announced in Washington March 31 by Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishop Mulvee, who turned 75, the usual retirement age for bishops, on Feb. 15, will serve as apostolic administrator of Providence until Bishop Tobin is installed. Bishop Tobin, who turns 57 April 1, was born in Pittsburgh. He graduated in 1969 from St. Francis College in Loreto, Pa. He later earned a separate bachelor's degree in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome and was ordained in 1973 for the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
