NAPLES, Fla. (CNS) -- Ave Maria University has created a new scholarship fund for current and former members of the U.S. Marine Corps to attend the university in Naples. The scholarship fund was launched with an initial contribution of $100,000 by the Ave Maria Foundation and announced by former Marine Thomas S. Monaghan, university chancellor and Domino's Pizza founder. Monaghan said the Marine Corps motto -- "semper fidelis" (always faithful) -- represents fidelity to "our core values of honor, courage and commitment" and to "defending the freedom and liberties enjoyed by our great nation today." Ave Maria University also announced plans for a Gallery of Gyrene Greats to publicly recognize former Marines who, through a continued commitment to Marine Corps values, have achieved great success. Gyrene is a slang term for a Marine.
