Detroit Archdiocese announces closing of 15 Catholic schools
Published: 2005-03-17
DETROIT (CNS) -- The Detroit Archdiocese announced March 16 that it will close 15 Catholic schools, including seven high schools and eight elementary schools, at the end of this school year. In total, 18 Catholic schools in the archdiocese will close this June, including one campus of a school, a high school run by a religious order and an elementary school that announced its closure in February. Detroit Cardinal Adam J. Maida described the decision to close the schools as "probably the toughest decision I have had to make here in my life here as the archbishop." The closings were announced to the public March 16 at a news conference at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. The schools that are closing are in the city of Detroit or just on its outskirts. Many of them have been in existence for at least 100 years.
