VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II has named four cardinals and an archbishop to lead the discussions at October's world Synod of Bishops on the Eucharist. The Vatican announced March 12 that the pope had chosen Italian Cardinal Angelo Scola of Venice to be the synod's general rapporteur, or recording secretary, introducing and later summarizing the bishops' discussion. The synod is scheduled for Oct. 2-29 at the Vatican. The pope also chose three cardinals to take turns presiding over the synod's daily sessions. They are: Cardinals Francis Arinze of Nigeria, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments; Juan Sandoval Iniguez of Guadalajara, Mexico; and Telesphore Placidus Toppo of Ranchi, India. The synod's special secretary will be French Archbishop Roland Minnerath of Dijon, the Vatican said.
