New photo service can brighten diocesan newspaper Web sites

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Diocesan newspaper Web sites will look brighter and newsier in coming months as they begin using a new Catholic News Service product, photo images for Web sites. Nearly 200 CNS publishing clients subscribe to the CNS photos/graphics service. "The bulk of them have some sort of Web presence," said Nancy L. Wiechec, who is photos/graphics manager. She said the news service currently supplies its clients with an average of about 300 high-resolution digital photos a month for use in print publications. Since March 1, next to the download button for every high-resolution image is another button to download a low-resolution version for use on clients' Web sites. "These days it's a very visual world," said CNS Director and Editor in Chief Tony Spence. "Over the years newspapers and magazines have understood that they have to be much more aggressive in using good photography and good graphic imagery along with words to really have a big visual impact for stories. The Web, the new medium which we're all using now, is even much more visually demanding."
