SAGINAW, Mich. (CNS) -- Pledging that he would "teach only authentic Catholic doctrine" and saying that "the future was full of hope," Bishop Robert J. Carlson was installed Feb. 24 as the fifth bishop of the Saginaw Diocese. Thirty bishops and archbishops attended the ceremony that was led by Detroit Cardinal Adam J. Maida and Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, the apostolic nuncio to the United States. More than 800 people came to St. Mary Cathedral to see the former leader of the Diocese of Sioux Falls, S.D., as he formally took over as shepherd of a diocese that covers 11 counties and has 132,000 Catholics. Bishop Carlson, who was in Sioux Falls for 10 years, succeeded the late Bishop Kenneth E. Untener, who died of complications of leukemia last March 27 after almost 24 years as Saginaw bishop. In his homily, Bishop Carlson said he was proud to be the new bishop and would "try to be the best bishop possible."
