'Souper Bowl' collection nears $3 million mark

Published:

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The "Souper Bowl of Caring," an annual collection drive in U.S. churches held on Super Bowl Sunday, has close to $3 million in reported contributions this year. By late in the day Feb. 14, Souper Bowl officials said $2.95 million in donations had been reported so far. The amount was expected to go up as donations can now be reported year-round on the Souper Bowl's Web site and through e-mail, as well as via a toll-free telephone number. Last year the organization, based in Columbia, S.C., tallied a total of $4.26 million collected for local charities. Souper Bowl collections, generally conducted by church youth groups after church services on the Sunday of the annual NFL Super Bowl football championship game, never go to a central site but instead are earmarked for local food banks, food pantries, and similar anti-hunger initiatives of the youth groups' own choosing. This year the collection was Feb. 6.
