Donations, prayers continue for tsunami victims

Published: 2005-02-02

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Part of the world's assistance to tsunami victims has come in the form of donations to help them rebuild their lives. Catholics in the Norwich Diocese in Connecticut have given just over $222,591 in donations to Catholic Relief Services for tsunami aid. Many of the diocese's 78 parishes took up special collections and individuals also made contributions. CRS, the U.S. bishops' overseas relief and development agency, was recently listed by The Chronicle of Philanthropy as being the third largest U.S. provider of relief aid for tsunami victims. As of Jan. 31, the agency raised $51.1 million, $12.1 million of which came from online donations. Dioceses across the United States that have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to be distributed to CRS for tsunami relief include: Archdiocese of New York, $1.8 million; Brooklyn, N.Y. Diocese, more than $1 million; Manchester, N.H., Diocese, $576,000; Dallas Diocese, more than $600,000; Harrisburg, Pa., Diocese, $745,000; Diocese of Pittsburgh, $2.5 million; and Archdiocese of Seattle, $1.2 million. The Diocese of Camden, N.J., raised $1.17 million for tsunami relief. Of that amount, at least $975,000 will be directed to Catholic Relief Services, and the rest will be sent directly to two dioceses in India and to other relief organizations.
