Parishes in Newark Archdiocese help fight human trafficking
Published: 2005-01-21
NEWARK, N.J. (CNS) -- Following Newark Archbishop John J. Myers' lead, parishes in the archdiocese are supporting the movement against human trafficking. St. Henry Parish in Bayonne recently hosted a workshop sponsored by the New Jersey Anti-Trafficking Initiative and the Archdiocese of Newark. It was the first of a number to be held in the archdiocese's four counties to educate parishes on the reality of human trafficking, particularly in the northern New Jersey area, and how they can become involved in anti-trafficking efforts. The impetus for the session was the launching in August of an extensive program in northern New Jersey to combat human trafficking and to aid victims. "Evil is always with us in one form or another," Archbishop Myers said at the press conference held at the Archdiocesan Center in Newark to announce the program. "As human beings, as people of faith, it is our responsibility to ease suffering, to heal those hurt by wrongdoers, to act at every opportunity to build a more just society. In doing so, we are called upon to bring light to the darkness."
