National black Catholic group urges people to pray rosary for life

Published: 2005-01-19

NEW YORK (CNS) -- The National Black Catholic Apostolate for Life urged people to say the rosary Jan. 24 to pray for an end to abortion. The apostolate is sponsoring "Black Catholic Rosary Across America for Life" on the day that people were scheduled to be marching in Washington to protest the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion in the United States. It urged people to say the rosary before or after Mass, at school, at work, in neighborhood meeting places "or wherever the Lord leads us to pray" the rosary. In announcing the rosary, the apostolate said it also hoped people would pray the rosary not just to end abortion but to pray for peace in the world, for the sanctity of family life, and for the elimination of the causes of poverty and "the hardships associated with bearing and raising children, illness, injustice, oppression, racism and whatever leads to a choice against the sacredness of life." The National Black Catholic Apostolate for Life, whose president is Franciscan Father James E. Goode, was founded in 1997.
