'There is much to discover' about Columbus, says diocese's new bishop

COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNS) -- At his Jan. 13 installation Mass, new Columbus Bishop Frederick F. Campbell told a packed assembly at St. Joseph Cathedral, "I have not arrived here with a roll of blueprints and a large set of specifications." Indeed, Bishop Campbell said, "there is much to discover" about Columbus and the diocese's 106 parishes and 240,000 Catholics, "and I must be careful about outlining plans so early in my tenure here." Something Bishop Campbell has discovered prior to coming to Columbus is how, "on this wonderful pilgrimage to the kingdom ... all depends on the love and grace of God, and how exceedingly precious is the communion of the faithful who are on the journey with me." One goal he hopes to accomplish is to be a shepherd to souls, he said. Bishop Campbell, auxiliary bishop of St. Paul-Minneapolis until he was named to Columbus last October, expressed his desire to visit each parish in the 23-county diocese.
