WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of Washington, chairman of the board of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, has named a search committee to find a successor to Bishop-designate Michael J. Bransfield, outgoing shrine rector. Archbishop Henry J. Mansell of Hartford, Conn., chairs the five-member search committee. Bishop-designate Bransfield, a Philadelphia priest who has served as rector of the nation's patronal church since 1986, will be ordained a bishop and installed as head of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, W.Va., Feb. 22. The search committee hopes to select his successor by that time. The committee, made up of members of the shrine's board of trustees, includes Bishops Paul S. Loverde of Arlington, Va., and William E. Lori of Bridgeport, Conn.; Joseph Braddock of Alexandria, Va.; and Carl A. Anderson, supreme knight of the Knights of Columbus.
