STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (CNS) -- Joseph A. Varacalli, a professor of sociology and director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Nassau Community College-State University of New York, was the 2004 recipient of the Pope Pius XI Award, the highest honor given by the Society of Catholic Social Scientists. The award is given "for contributions to the building of a true Catholic social science" as called for by Pope Pius XI in his social encyclical, "Quadragesimo Anno." The society, founded in 1992 and based at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, is dedicated both to incorporating Catholic principles into social scientific research and applying Catholic social teachings to social and public policy questions.
