Seminary's new postgraduate degree program focuses on evangelization

Published: 2004-12-29

DETROIT (CNS) -- Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit is offering a new postgraduate degree program believed to be the first in the country -- a licentiate in theology with a specialization in pastoral theology focusing on the "new evangelization." The 48-credit-hour program is open to priests, religious and laity who have earned a bachelor's degree in theology or its equivalent, have studied classical and modern languages and have sufficient philosophical preparation. Sacred Heart, which is offering the degree through the University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, received approval for the program in September from the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education. Students will receive training in modern methods of evangelization, as well as course work in Christology, Christian anthropology, Catholic social analysis, urban ministry and spirituality. Graduates will be prepared to lead evangelization efforts at the diocesan or parish level or to teach at a Catholic seminary or university.
