INDIANAPOLIS (CNS) -- One day after receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush at the White House Dec. 14, L. Paul Bremer III, former administrator in Iraq, was honored by Civitas Dei in Indianapolis for courageous leadership and service to the United States. Bremer received the Thomas E. Burnett Jr. Heroic Leadership Award, named in honor of Burnett for his heroic actions on Sept. 11, 2001. Burnett and other passengers fought terrorists on board hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 and forced the plane to crash in rural Pennsylvania instead of into the White House, which officials believed was the terrorists' intended destination. Bremer, a Catholic, served as the presidential envoy to Iraq and administrator of the coalition provisional authority there from May 6, 2003, to June 28, 2004. "I'm really honored and very humbled to receive this award," Bremer told members of Civitas Dei, a Catholic business association, and the Legatus Society of Indiana and other guests.
