DETROIT (CNS) -- Cardinal Adam J. Maida of Detroit praised Jane Wolford Hughes as "a consistent voice and presence, pioneer and model of the importance of adult faith formation" after learning of Hughes' death Dec. 20. Hughes, 84, died of heart failure at the West Bloomfield Nursing and Convalescent Center. Her funeral Mass was scheduled for Dec. 23 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Farmington. "Having moved from leadership in the Council of Catholic Women to become the first director of the Institute for Continuing Education in the archdiocese, Jane helped implement the teachings of Vatican II throughout the archdiocese," the cardinal said in a statement. Hughes also assisted in the religious education of Catholics nationwide as a frequent contributor to Catholic News Service's religious education package now known as Faith Alive! She continued to write occasional articles for Faith Alive! until 2001.
