'Live eucharistic lives,' Cardinal Dulles urges Connecticut Catholics
Published: 2004-12-01
NORWICH, Conn. (CNS) -- Cardinal Avery Dulles reminded those gathered at the Cathedral of St. Patrick Nov. 28 that "the worthy reception of the Eucharist is the best possible preparation for meeting the Lord." Cardinal Dulles, who was the homilist at a special Mass opening the Year of the Eucharist in the Norwich Diocese, also urged all to "live eucharistic lives, marked by obedience and sacrifice, not by selfishness and dissipation." Preaching on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend, which was also the first Sunday of Advent this year, Cardinal Dulles reflected on the themes of thanksgiving and Advent, which is a season of preparation, and related both to the Eucharist. When Jesus directed the apostles, after his resurrection, to celebrate a meal in memory of him, they called the meal a eucharist, or in Hebrew a "todah," which translates exactly as "thanksgiving," the cardinal explained.
