Step up to produce better candidates, Catholics urged
Published: 2004-11-23
WILMINGTON, Del. (CNS) -- Catholics who felt they had to choose between "the lesser of two evils" in the recent presidential election should work to change the political parties' policies so they will provide better candidates in the future, a representative of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said Nov. 11. "A lot of Catholics feel politically homeless these days," said Kathy Curran, a policy adviser for the bishops' Department of Social Development and World Peace. "We find ourselves having to choose between two less-than-perfect candidates." Curran spoke to about 30 young adults at a Theology on Tap session at Catherine Rooney's Irish Pub and Restaurant in Wilmington. Theology on Tap, a program in a number of U.S. Catholic dioceses, invites young adults to local bars and restaurants for speaker-led discussions on topics of interest in the church. Curran spoke nine days after President George W. Bush defeated Democratic Sen. John F. Kerry in the presidential election. The election might be over, she said, but "the issues are still there. We have to live out faithful citizenship every day."
