VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Argentine Cardinal Juan Carlos Aramburu, who presided over the pastoral reorganization of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires in the 1970s and who headed the Argentine church during the "dirty war" between the government and guerrilla groups, died at age 92, the Vatican said. Pope John Paul II, who attended the Second Vatican Council with Cardinal Aramburu in the 1960s, sent a condolence telegram praising the late cardinal as a "zealous pastor who served his people and the church with great charity." Cardinal Aramburu, the pope said, distinguished himself for his "prudence and integrity" throughout a career that included service as a parish pastor, a university professor and a bishop. The cardinal died of heart failure at his residence in Buenos Aires; his funeral Mass was scheduled for Nov. 22 at Holy Trinity Cathedral with burial afterward in the cathedral.
