Kenyan bishops vow to defeat campaign to legalize abortion
Published: 2004-11-16
MOMBASA, Kenya (CNS) -- The Kenyan bishops vowed to defeat a movement to legalize abortion in the country. The bishops released a statement condemning abortion Nov. 12 at the end of their five-day plenary meeting in Mombasa. The bishops said they were firm in their stance and added that the state does not have the power to grant abortion rights. The bishops also vowed to publicize the opinions of members of Parliament who supported abortion rights; they said elected officials were in danger of losing support from average Kenyans over the abortion issue. They also warned that any Catholic who helped procure an abortion risked being excommunicated.
