Community supports convent's garage sale to help mission in Brazil
Published: 2004-11-12
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (CNS) -- The Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Frankfort have taken to heart the old adage that one person's trash is another person's treasure. For the past 18 years, they have sponsored a garage sale to benefit their order's mission in Brazil. Most of what is sold comes from the community, everything from toys and clothing to china and glassware. Supporters clean out their attics and garages and bring items to the order's Portiuncula Center in Frankfort, in the Joliet Diocese. This October the sisters raised $12,000. "The purpose is to help us raise funds for our mission, but it also helps us reach out to the shelters in this area as well," Franciscan Sister Mary Mark Segvich told the Catholic Explorer, newspaper of the Joliet Diocese. Clothing and other items that aren't sold are sent to Joliet shelters. Some of the clothing goes to the Franciscan brothers, who distribute it to needy men on the street.
