Missionaries of Charity superior visits order's New Mexico missions
Published: 2004-11-10
GALLUP, N.M. (CNS) -- For Sister Nirmala Joshi, superior general of the Missionaries of Charity, the concept of "poorest of the poor" transcends race, ethnicity and continents, as she observed during a visit to her order's two missions in New Mexico. She addressed the congregation at St. Patrick's Mission Church in Chichiltah, about 30 miles south of the order's Gallup mission. The church, shaped like a traditional Navajo dwelling known as a hogan, is nestled among indigenous pinon trees off a rural, dirt-caked road. Inside the pine-paneled church, the congregation listened to Sister Nirmala describe the beauty of the Navajo reservation and its people. The reservation, the largest in the United States, stretches across northwest New Mexico, northeast Arizona, and southeast Utah. The nun also talked about the need for God's love to be shared and appreciated.
