Close to 1,500 gather for San Francisco conference on faith formation

SAN FRANCISCO (CNS) -- San Jose Bishop Patrick J. McGrath told participants at the 2004 "Faith Formation Conference" in San Francisco that "Jesus taught the kingdom by doing simple things. ... We do justice when we do as Jesus did." He said the goal of those gathered for the conference at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco was to teach young and old "how to bless one another always." The bishop made the comments as he led conference attendees in morning prayer at an opening liturgy in the auditorium arena. Nearly 1,500 Catholics gathered Oct. 30 at the auditorium for the conference co-sponsored by the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the Diocese of San Jose. A day earlier about 250 more Catholics attended an afternoon session for professional teachers and catechists featuring presentations on the topics of justice, community and catechesis. The theme of the two-day conference -- "Proclaiming Christ, Doing Justice" -- illustrated the close relationship between proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ and the Christian obligation to work for justice.
